How They Compare

OpenClaw (300K+ stars)

OpenClaw is the most popular open-source AI project on GitHub -- 300K+ stars and climbing. It connects to 20+ messaging platforms (WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, Telegram, etc.), has 5,400+ community skills, and runs 24/7 as your always-on personal aide. The gap: CrewAI agents don't debate. They hand off. There's no contribution scoring to surface the right expert, no loop prevention beyond max-iteration caps, and no built-in security review. The openai package is a hard dependency even for local setups. Default telemetry is on. And the pricing ramp is steep -- platform fees on top of cloud API costs.

Use CrewAI when: You need sequential task pipelines, your team uses OpenAI, and you want enterprise support now.

LangGraph (26K+ stars)

LangGraph gives you maximum control over agent workflows via directed graphs. If you need conditional branching, cycles, fan-out/fan-in, and checkpoint-based human-in-the-loop, it's the most granular option.
